Paul, Apostle of Christ (2018)
Andrew Hyatt wrote and directed the American biblical drama film, Paul, Apostle of Christ (2018). Having strong influence as a Christian leader, Paul finds himself imprisoned in Mamertine Prison in Rome, posing a threat to Nero’s power. The newly appointed prefect of the prison, Mauritius Gallus, accuses him of setting fire to half of Rome and, under Nero’s decree, condemns him to death. In a weary and physically beaten state, Paul is greeted by Luke who has snuck into the prison after meeting with Aquila and Priscilla. As they both recognize that Paul’s time on Earth is limited, Luke asks him for help in writing an account of his journey from being known as Saul of Tarsus to becoming one of Christianity’s most influential leaders. Despite being aided by high-ranking Romans in his entrance to the prison, Luke remains unscathed thanks to Mauritius’ decision not to punish him.y in Rome and provide hope to fellow Christians or to leave the city with their community and avoid certain death.
In his narration, Paul shares his origins as a Jewish boy named Saul of Tarsus. He was heavily influenced by the fervor of his leaders and witnessed the execution of Stephen at their hands for declaring belief in Jesus Christ. This experience led Saul to make a vow to eradicate all Christians worldwide, until one day when he traveled to Damascus with fellow believers. It was during this journey that he was struck blind by God and heard His voice questioning why he persecuted Him. After encountering Ananias, a follower of Christ, Saul experienced such profound humility that he repented for his previous actions. Ananias then restored his sight and baptized him in the name of the Lord. This transformative event ultimately resulted in Saul rejecting his old name and becoming known as Paul. Meanwhile, the Christian community continues to suffer losses, which deeply affects Cassius who recently lost a cousin due to persecution. He passionately urges his fellow Christians to seek revenge against the Romans.
