Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (2022) is an animated martial arts comedy film directed by Rob Minkoff, Mark Koetsier, and Chris Bailey. It serves as a loose remake of the 1974 live-action film Blazing Saddles, and marks Koetsier and Bailey’s feature directorial debut. Set in a cat-inspired feudal Japan, the story centers around Ika Chu, a conniving high-ranking official of the Shogun. His desire to expand his palace poses a threat to the impoverished village of Kakamucho located nearby. In an attempt to drive the villagers away, Ika Chu dispatches a gang led by his second-in-command Ohga to terrorize them. In response, the townspeople demand for a new samurai to protect them after their previous champion flees. In an act of defiance towards the villagers, Ika Chu appoints Hank, a dog prisoner facing execution, as their protector.
Despite initially facing hostility, Hank turns to Jimbo for help. Although reluctant at first, the catnip-addled samurai agrees to train him in order to overcome the town’s animosity. During their training, Hank successfully defeats Sumo, a powerful henchman sent by Ika Chu to drive out the townspeople. As a result, the townspeople view Hank as a hero. However, his newfound fame goes to his head and he neglects his training, causing a rift between him and Jimbo. Eventually, Ika Chu lures Hank to a nightclub while his thugs destroy Kakamucho. When Hank returns to find the town destroyed, he argues with Jimbo before deciding to leave. But when an origami figure representing himself reminds him of his samurai code of honor, he has a change of heart.
