Payback (1999)
Payback (1999) is an American neo-noir action thriller film written and directed by Brian Helgeland in his directorial debut. Porter, a career thief and former U.S. Marine, has been shot and betrayed for $70,000. Following months of recovery, he takes matters into his own hands, using a series of petty thefts and short cons to obtain cash, a new suit, and a revolver. He had previously stolen $140,000 from a local Chinese Triad with the help of his partner-in-crime Val Resnick. However, things took a turn when Val manipulated Porter’s wife Lynn into thinking that he was having an affair with Rosie, a call girl he had previously protected.
In the midst of the chaos, Lynn shoots Porter and leaves him for dead as Val takes off with the stolen money to pay off a debt to ‘the Outfit’, a powerful organized crime syndicate. After confronting a guilt-ridden and heroin-addicted Lynn, Porter tries to take her drugs but she manages to find some in another hiding place. The next morning, Porter wakes to find Lynn dead from an overdose. Suspecting Val of fueling her addiction with financial assistance, Porter questions Lynn’s drug supplier. He is directed to Val’s middle-man, Stegman. With the aid of corrupt detectives Hicks and Leary, Stegman reveals to Val that Porter is alive. With Rosie now working for the Outfit, Porter enlists her help in ambushing Val while he is with Pearl, a dominatrix connected to the Triads.
