Paycheck (2003) is a science fiction action film directed by John Woo. Written by Dean Georgaris, it is adapted from Philip K. Dick’s short story of the same name. Set in the near future, the story follows Michael Jennings, a talented reverse engineer who improves upon his clients’ technology by analyzing their competitors’. To ensure confidentiality, Jennings undergoes memory wipes with the help of his friend Shorty. One day, he is contacted by his old college roommate James Rethrick, who offers him a three-year job at his company Allcom. In exchange for company stock, Jennings must remain on campus for the duration of his contract. Though hesitant, Jennings agrees and receives an injection that erases his memories. As he is given a tour of the campus, he meets biologist Dr. Rachel Porter and sparks fly between them. But things take a turn when Rethrick introduces Jennings to his work partner, physicist William Dekker.
Three years later, Jennings is emerged from his memory wipe and receives praise from Rethrick. He learns that his Allcom stock, which he earned before the wipe, is now worth a staggering US$92 million. However, upon visiting his lawyer to access the funds, he discovers that he had already given away all the stock just weeks ago. In addition, Jennings is given an envelope containing his alleged possessions from his time at Allcom, but instead finds an odd collection of items inside. This only adds to his confusion as he is suddenly apprehended by the FBI. Agent Dodge confronts Jennings with accusations of possessing classified government designs stolen by Dekker, who has since passed away. Due to his wiped memory, Jennings is unable to respond but manages to find a way out using the contents of the mysterious envelope.
