Pearl Harbor (2001)
The film Pearl Harbor (2001) was directed by Michael Bay and produced by both Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer. Written by Randall Wallace, the story takes place in Tennessee in 1923 where two close friends, Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker, often play together in Danny’s father’s old biplane, pretending to be heroic pilots. Danny’s father is a World War One Veteran struggling with PTSD. Fast forward to January 1941 during the height of World War II, both Rafe and Danny are first lieutenants serving under Major Jimmy Doolittle. Excitedly, Doolittle shares with Rafe that he has been accepted into the prestigious Eagle Squadron – an RAF outfit for American pilots during the intense Battle of Britain. Through some luck and determination, a nurse named Evelyn Johnson manages to pass Rafe’s medical exam despite his dyslexia. The two quickly grow fond of each other and begin a relationship.
A short four weeks after their first meeting, Rafe and Evelyn find themselves deeply in love as they dance at a nightclub and later take a joyride through New York harbor on a borrowed police boat. Rafe shocks Evelyn by announcing his sudden departure as he joins the Eagle Squadron. Sadly, while on a mission to intercept a Luftwaffe bombing raid, Rafe is shot down over the English Channel and is presumed dead. Devastated by their mutual loss, Danny and Evelyn find comfort in each other’s company, leading to a blossoming romance. Meanwhile, tension mounts as Japan prepares to attack the US Pacific Fleet with a decisive strike at Pearl Harbor naval base. On the night of December 6, Evelyn is taken aback when she sees Rafe standing outside her door, alive after surviving months trapped in Nazi-occupied France.
