Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), directed by Tim Burton, follows Pee-wee Herman’s quest to find his beloved, heavily accessorized bicycle. His neighbor and rival, Francis Buxton, has his sights set on the bike and Dottie, an employee at a bike shop, has a crush on Pee-wee. However, he does not reciprocate her feelings. As Pee-wee embarks on a shopping spree, his bike is stolen. Though the police are not concerned about the theft, Pee-wee suspects Francis and confronts him. Francis’ father assures him that his son had nothing to do with it. Desperate to retrieve his prized possession, Pee-wee offers a generous reward of $10,000. But Francis pays for someone else to take the bike far away. Undeterred by this setback, Pee-wee holds a meeting with friends and neighbors to gather evidence but it proves unsuccessful. Despite offers of help, Pee-wee remains determined to find his beloved bicycle.

After being told by a fake psychic that his bike is located in the basement of the Alamo Mission in San Antonio, Pee-wee sets off on his journey. Along the way, he hitches rides with a fugitive named Mickey and Large Marge, a ghostly truck driver. At a truck stop, Pee-wee discovers his wallet is missing and has to wash dishes to pay for his meal. He strikes up a conversation with Simone, a waitress with dreams of traveling to Paris. As they watch the sunrise from inside a dinosaur statue, Pee-wee encourages her to pursue her aspirations. However, Simone reveals that her boyfriend Andy disapproves of her dreams. Soon after, Andy shows up and attempts to attack Pee-wee, who manages to escape onto a moving train. Finally arriving at the Alamo, Pee-wee excitedly goes on a guided tour only to find out that there is no basement in the building.
