Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), an American fantasy comedy-drama directed by Francis Ford Coppola, follows the story of Peggy Sue Bodell. She attends her 25-year high school reunion in 1985, accompanied by her daughter Beth instead of her high-school sweetheart and husband, Charlie. They married soon after graduation when Peggy Sue became pregnant but have since separated due to Charlie’s infidelity. At the reunion, she reconnects with her old high school friends Maddy and Carol while ignoring Charlie’s unexpected arrival. The emcee then announces the reunion’s “king and queen”: Richard Norvik, the former class geek turned billionaire inventor, and Peggy Sue herself. Overwhelmed, she faints onstage while being crowned.
After a strange and jarring awakening, Peggy Sue finds herself transported back to her high school senior year in 1960. Feeling overwhelmed and out of place, she plans to visit her parents and pretend that everything is as it should be. Seeking answers, she turns to Richard Norvik for support and shares her experience with him. Initially skeptical, Richard becomes convinced when Peggy Sue reveals specific details about their future. Later on, she makes the decision to end things with Charlie. But at a party, she changes her mind and wants to sleep with him – only for him to remind her that she rejected him just the weekend before.
