Gardens of Stone (1987)
Gardens of Stone (1987), an American drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is based on Nicholas Proffitt’s novel of the same name. Sergeant First Class Clell Hazard, a hardened veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, would prefer to serve as an instructor at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, preparing soldiers for the conflict in Vietnam. However, he is instead assigned to the 1st Battalion 3d Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) at Fort Myer, Virginia. This unit serves as the ceremonial honor guard for fallen soldiers’ funerals and guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Hazard refers to these tasks as dealing with “toy soldiers” and dislikes them greatly. However, when Jackie Willow joins his platoon- the son of an old comrade- Hazard sees an opportunity to ensure that at least one man returns home from Vietnam alive.
Hazard cautions Willow about the situation in Vietnam, but Willow believes it is his duty as a soldier to defend his country, regardless of the type of conflict. Hazard strongly disapproves of the handling of the war and laments the loss of skilled soldiers in a campaign that he feels is not being pursued with determination by the U.S. Among Hazard’s associates are his close friend and commanding officer, Sergeant Major ‘Goody’ Nelson, and Samantha Davis, a journalist for The Washington Post who opposes the Vietnam War for different reasons. Meanwhile, Willow marries Rachel Feld, daughter of a colonel, who initially insists on ending their relationship if Jackie remains in the military. Like many others, Rachel despises the Vietnam War and worries for her husband’s safety. Hazard has been divorced for some time and has not seen his son since their difficult split.
