The period thriller, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006), follows the life of notorious murderer Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. Directed by Tom Tykwer and written in collaboration with Andrew Birkin and Bernd Eichinger, the film is based on Patrick Süskind’s novel of the same name. Grenouille’s story is told through flashbacks, beginning with his sentencing for his crimes. Abandoned at birth in a French fish market and raised in an orphanage, Grenouille grows into a detached young man with an extraordinary sense of smell. As an apprentice tanner, he makes his way to Paris where he becomes enthralled by the new scents around him. He becomes particularly fixated on a redheaded girl selling yellow plums and attempts to sniff her, causing her to be startled by his actions. In an effort to silence her, he unintentionally suffocates her while covering her mouth.
Upon discovering her death, he undresses her and takes in her fragrance, but is devastated when it dissipates. This longing for her scent consumes him and he seeks to recreate it. While delivering a package to a perfume shop, Grenouille impresses the owner, Giuseppe Baldini, with his talent for crafting scents. He revives Baldini’s business with innovative formulas, only asking to learn how to preserve fragrances in return. Baldini teaches Grenouille that all perfumes consist of twelve scents, with a possible thirteenth. However, Grenouille is disheartened to learn that Baldini’s method cannot capture all aromas (namely, those of people). Yet Baldini reveals another technique used in Grasse and rewards Grenouille with journeyman papers for providing 100 new perfume recipes.
