Pet Sematary (2019) is an American horror film directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer. Based on Stephen King’s 1983 novel of the same name, it is the second adaptation of the story. Louis Creed, an ER doctor from Boston, Massachusetts, relocates to Ludlow, Maine with his family after losing their home. With his wife Rachel, their two children, Ellie and Gage, and their cat Church in tow, they settle into small-town life. During an exploration of the nearby woods, Rachel and Ellie come across a group of children performing a funeral ritual for a dead dog at a place called ‘Pet Sematary’. Meanwhile, Louis struggles with a traumatic event at the university hospital where he works. He is haunted by a dream where Victor Pascow, a student he was unable to save, leads him to the back of the cemetery and cautions him against going any further.
Upon waking, Louis discovers his feet and sheets are coated in mud, indicating that the previous events were more than just a bad dream. On Halloween, Church is tragically killed by a passing truck. Jud Crandall, their friendly neighbor with a soft spot for Ellie, leads Louis to an ancient burial ground next to the pet cemetery where they bury Church. To Louis’ amazement, Church appears alive again the following day. Jud confesses that the burial ground has the power to bring things back from the dead and is rumored to be inhabited by a spirit known as the Wendigo. He apologizes for not realizing that Church would return different. After Church attacks Gage, Louis initially attempts to put him down, but ultimately decides to release him into the wilderness instead.
