After his mother passes away, Gogo is brought to England by his uncle who gives him an English name in honor of his mother’s maiden name – transforming him into Peter Ibbetson. ‘And so marks the end of the first chapter in the remarkable life of Peter Ibbetson’. As an adult, Ibbetson works as an architect in Yorkshire, restoring a project for the Duke of Towers, a member of high society. He falls deeply in love with Mary, Duchess of Towers, despite her already being wed.
When the duke discovers their affair, he heartlessly demands an explanation. It is then that Peter realizes Mary is actually his childhood sweetheart. Throughout all these years apart, Mary has kept the dress she wore when they last met as children safely tucked away in her dresser. The Duke, filled with jealousy, pulls out a gun on Ibbetson. In the struggle that ensues, Ibbetson defends himself and the Duke is killed. Despite acting in self-defense, Ibbetson is wrongfully found guilty of murder and given a life sentence. As he sits in prison, he despairs at the thought of never being able to see Mary again. During a confrontation with his guards, he sustains a serious injury and falls into unconsciousness.
