Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
Phantom of the Paradise (1974) is an American rock musical comedy horror film written and directed by Brian De Palma. Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Winslow Leach catches the ear of renowned record producer Swan while performing his original composition following a set by the popular 1950s-style band, the Juicy Fruits, whom Swan manages. Impressed by Winslow’s music, Swan sees it as the perfect fit for the grand opening of The Paradise – his highly anticipated new concert hall. With the guise of producing Winslow, Swan’s right-hand man Arnold Philbin swipes the music for their own use. A month later, Winslow visits Death Records to check on his music but is promptly kicked out. Determined to find answers, he sneaks into Swan’s lavish mansion and witnesses a group of women rehearsing his songs for an audition.
One of them is Phoenix, an aspiring singer who Winslow believes is ideal for his music. As he pieces together Swan’s plot to exploit his work for The Paradise opening, he is once again thrown out on the street. Following his failed attempt to speak to Swan, he decides to disguise himself as a woman in order to sneak in. However, instead of granting him an audience, Swan has him falsely accused of dealing drugs and brutally beaten. As a result, Winslow is sentenced to life in Sing Sing prison where he becomes part of an experimental program aimed at reducing infections among inmates. This program, funded by the Swan Foundation, also involves replacing his teeth with metal ones. Six months later, Winslow learns that Swan has released a hit record using his music and the Juicy Fruits as performers.
