Phantoms (1998)
Phantoms (1998) is a science fiction horror film based on Dean Koontz’s novel of the same name. The movie, directed by Joe Chappelle and written by Koontz, follows Dr. Jennifer Pailey as she brings her sister Lisa to Snowfield, Colorado – a small ski village nestled in the Rocky Mountains where Jenny works. However, upon their arrival, they discover that the town is eerily deserted save for a few lifeless bodies. As they initially suspect a serial killer on the loose, Sheriff Hammond and his deputies are already investigating the murders. Eventually, the group stumbles upon an unsettling message written on a hotel mirror: ‘Timothy Flyte’. When Shanning goes to investigate a strange noise outside, she fails to return.
The remaining members discover only his gun, hat, and shoes among the missing pieces of him. Upon arriving at the sheriff’s office, they call for backup and set up roadblocks in Snowfield. As they receive a phone call, an attack by a moth-like creature interrupts them. Later on, Lisa encounters Wargle in the bathroom. Upon returning to the morgue, his body is nowhere to be found. The creature has a history of wiping out civilizations, such as the Mayans and Roanoke Island colonists. The group is soon joined by an Army commando unit and a team of scientists led by General Copperfield, who have come to investigate Snowfield. Together with Flyte, they begin their investigation of the town. However, as soldiers enter the sewers they are attacked by the creature while a dog transforms into a beast and turns the rest of the group except for Flyte.
