Phenomena (1985) is a giallo-horror film directed and co-written by Dario Argento. After missing a bus in the Swiss countryside, 14-year-old Danish tourist Vera Brandt seeks help at a nearby cottage. She falls victim to an attack by an unknown assailant, who beheads her. The case is later examined by forensic entomologist John McGregor and Inspector Rudolf Geiger of the Kantonspolizei Zürich, who discover that Brandt is just one of several young girls who have been murdered. McGregor’s former assistant is also among the victims. Meanwhile, Jennifer Corvino, daughter of a famous American actor, arrives at the Swiss Richard Wagner Academy for Girls with chaperone Frau Brückner. She is assigned to share a room with Sophie. One night, while sleepwalking on the academy’s roof, Jennifer witnesses another student being killed.
She escapes into the woods, where she is found by McGregor’s chimpanzee companion Inga and brought to him for help. After observing how fond his captured insects are of Jennifer, McGregor becomes convinced that she shares a telepathic connection with them. This leads the headmistress at the academy to subject Jennifer to an EEG test for her sleepwalking. Although the procedure makes her uncomfortable, she briefly experiences visions of the previous night’s events. The next night, Sophie is mistakenly killed by the murderer, who thought she was Jennifer due to their matching sweaters from the previous murder. Once again sleepwalking, Jennifer follows a firefly and ends up discovering a glove infested with maggots at the location of Sophie’s death.
