Piper (2016)

In 2016, Pixar Animation Studios produced a computer-animated short film called Piper (2016). It was awarded the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 89th Academy Awards, making it the first Pixar short to win since For the Birds in 2001. The film’s director, Alan Barillaro, utilized cutting edge technology to bring Piper to life during a three-year process. To ensure an accurate portrayal of the sandpipers and other birds seen in the background, Barillaro and his animation team visited several beaches in the San Francisco Bay Area and also observed their appearance and behavior at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The attention to detail even extended to the rendering of the sandpipers’ feathers.
A flock of sandpipers hunts for food along the seashore, scouring for bivalves left behind by the receding waves. A young bird, nicknamed Piper, joins her mother on a trip to the shoreline to learn these hunting techniques. However, during one attempt, Piper is caught off guard by a returning wave and gets drenched. This experience instills in her a fear of water, causing her to stay put at their nesting spot. But when hunger strikes, Piper musters up the courage to venture back to the shore and spots a hermit crab digging in the sand. As she observes its actions, another wave crashes in unexpectedly and submerges her yet again. However, this time the crab advises Piper to open her eyes and she discovers large bivalves waiting for her on the sand.
