Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) is a swashbuckling adventure directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. At the wedding of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, their celebration is cut short when Lord Cutler Beckett arrives at Port Royal with arrest warrants. These charges stem from their involvement in freeing Captain Jack Sparrow. However, they are not the only ones on Beckett’s list. Commodore James Norrington also has a warrant for his arrest but has since resigned from the Royal Navy and disappeared after losing his ship to a hurricane while chasing Jack. On board the Black Pearl, Jack receives a visit from Will’s father, Bootstrap Bill Turner. It becomes apparent that Bootstrap is now part of Captain Davy Jones’ crew on the notorious Flying Dutchman. This revelation also explains why Jack owes Jones a debt for previously arranging to raise the Pearl from the depths in exchange for his own freedom – a debt that Jack has yet to repay.

As punishment, Jack must now serve aboard the Dutchman or face being taken down to Davy Jones’ Locker by the terrifying Kraken creature. Meanwhile, as Beckett presents Letters of Marque from King George for Jack Sparrow, he proposes a deal to release Will and Elizabeth if Will can retrieve Jack’s compass. Amidst his journey, Will encounters Jack and his crew on an island, and assists in their escape from cannibal captivity. Later on, Jack seeks guidance from Tia Dalma, who aids in locating the Dead Man’s Chest containing Davy Jones’ still-beating heart. With this chest in sight, Jack hopes to rid himself of his debt to Jones. Meanwhile, Will strikes a bargain with Jack to obtain the key to the chest in exchange for the compass, but ends up being tricked into joining Jones’ crew on the Dutchman instead. In order for Sparrow to be released from duty aboard the Dutchman, Jones demands 99 more souls.
