Pitch Perfect (2012), an American musical comedy film directed by Jason Moore and written by Kay Cannon, follows the story of Barden University’s all-female a cappella group, the Barden Bellas. At the 2011 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) Finals held at Lincoln Center, they suffer a humiliating defeat to their all-male rivals, the Barden Treblemakers. Their loss can be attributed to junior member Aubrey Posen’s unfortunate onstage incident of vomiting during her solo. This causes the Bellas’ reputation to plummet within both the a cappella community and on campus. Four months later, Beca Mitchell enrolls as a freshman at Barden University under pressure from her father, who is also a professor at the university. Despite having no interest in attending college, Beca spends her time making mash-up mixes of songs and secures an internship at the school radio station.
It is there that she meets and befriends Jesse Swanson, another freshman student. After some sorority shenanigans and thorough training, the Bellas compete in the 2012 ICCA Regionals. Despite Aubrey’s insistence on reprising their winning medley from the previous year, the Treblemakers take first place with their unoriginal performance. However, the Bellas still manage to secure second place, earning them a spot in the Semi-Finals. Following the competition, they intervene in a fight between the Treblemakers and Tonehangers – a male alumni a cappella group. Unfortunately, Beca and Fat Amy accidentally break a window with the Treblemakers’ trophy, resulting in Beca’s arrest by the police. Jesse reaches out to her father for help, but Beca’s frustration causes tension within their relationship as well as with her fellow Bellas.
