Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) is an American musical comedy directed and produced by Elizabeth Banks, marking her feature directorial debut (not counting her involvement in Movie 43). The screenplay, written by Kay Cannon, follows the Barden Bellas three years after their first championship win. This time around, they are under the leadership of senior Beca Mitchell and three-time super senior Chloe Beale. Having dominated the ICCA National competition for three consecutive years, the group faces a national controversy (nicknamed ‘Muffgate’) when Patricia ‘Fat Amy’ Hobart accidentally exposes herself to President Barack Obama during a performance at the Kennedy Center. As a result, the Bellas are suspended from participating in future ICCAs but not stripped of their past titles. In order to regain their standing and reputation, Beca makes a deal that hinges on winning the A Cappella World Championship.

Freshman Emily Junk begins her college career with aspirations of joining the renowned Bella A Cappella group, like her mother Katherine before her. At orientation, she is captivated by the Treblemakers’ performance, now led by Beca’s boyfriend Jesse Swanson. It is there that Benjamin ‘Benji’ Applebaum becomes smitten with Emily at first sight. Meanwhile, the Bellas face disqualification from competing in the World Championships after being replaced on their victory tour by powerhouse German group Das Sound Machine (DSM). Additionally, Beca’s secret internship at recording studio Residual Heat is discovered by Jesse and later Fat Amy. Due to their suspension, the Bellas cannot hold auditions, but luckily Emily takes matters into her own hands and impresses them with her original song ‘Flashlight’. The Bellas decide to welcome her into the group since she sought them out independently and they technically aren’t breaking any rules.
