Planet 51 (2009), an animated science fiction comedy directed by Jorge Blanco, features green extraterrestrials living peacefully in a society reminiscent of the 1950s United States. However, this planet and its inhabitants differ significantly from Earth, as their lack of knowledge about astronomy leads them to believe that the Universe only stretches for around 500 miles. When a mysterious spacecraft lands in the city of Glipforg, NASA astronaut Captain Charles T. ‘Chuck’ Baker emerges and is surprised to discover life on the planet. Chuck quickly escapes to the town’s planetarium where he meets Lem, a teenage alien who works there part-time. With only three days until his spaceship departs for Earth and leaves him stranded, Chuck convinces Lem to help him return to it. Unfortunately, Planet 51’s army arrives and assumes Chuck is an alien invader attempting to turn them into zombies like those depicted in media. A manhunt ensues led by the paranoid General Grawl.

Lem enlists his best friend Skiff’s help in hiding Chuck from the army. Skiff is known for his love of science fiction and has theories about ‘Base 9’, the Planet 51 equivalent of Area 51. While trying to keep Chuck hidden, Lem inadvertently angers his neighbor and crush Neera, who believes that Chuck is friendly. He also ends up getting fired from his job when his boss finds out about Chuck’s presence. Meanwhile, in Lem’s room, Chuck reunites with a NASA probe named Rover, who had escaped from the army’s base and was tracking Chuck with GPS before heading to the city. Rover becomes friends with a domesticated Xenomorph. The army later searches Lem’s home but finds no sign of the alien. Lem and Skiff then move Chuck to the comic book store where Skiff works. Unfortunately, a news station captures footage of Chuck mimicking Earth’s pop culture references, which is misinterpreted as an alien threat.
