Planet of the Apes (2001) is an American science fiction adventure film directed by Tim Burton and written by William Broyles Jr., Lawrence Konner, and Mark Rosenthal. Serving as the sixth installment in the Planet of the Apes film series, it is loosely based on Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel and also acts as a remake of the 1968 movie adaptation. In 2029, Leo Davidson works closely with trained apes on the United States Air Force space station Oberon. His preferred ape co-worker is Pericles, a chimpanzee. When a deadly electromagnetic storm approaches, Pericles’s pod is sent to investigate but disappears. Leo embarks on a mission to find him using a second pod, losing contact with the Oberon and eventually crash-landing on Ashlar, a planet in 5021 A.D.
He discovers that the world is ruled by humanoid apes who speak English, use domesticated horses for transportation, and treat human beings as slaves. Among them, he meets a female chimpanzee named Ari who speaks out against the mistreatment of humans. She then purchases Leo and another slave named Daena to work in her father, Senator Sandar’s household. After managing to escape his cage, Leo sets free other captive humans. Limbo, an orangutan trader also present, is captured to ensure his silence. The ruthless General Thade and his gorilla junior, Colonel Attar lead their troops to chase after the escaped humans. It is on this journey that Leo uncovers Calima; the forbidden but sacred temple of ‘Semos’, the first ape believed to be a god by their kind.
