Play It Again, Sam (1972)
Play It Again, Sam (1972) is a comedic film written and starring Woody Allen. The movie, based on Allen’s play of the same name, takes place in San Francisco and opens with the final scenes of Casablanca featuring legends Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Our main character, Allan Felix, is at the theater watching with his mouth agape as he longs to be like Rick. He is haunted by visions of Bogart and memories of his ex-wife Nancy, who constantly belittled him for his sexual inadequacy during their turbulent divorce. Trying to lift his spirits, Allan’s friends Dick Christie and his wife Linda set him up on a series of blind dates, all of which end disastrously.
Throughout the film, Allan seeks guidance in his love life from the apparition of Bogart, who is only visible and audible to him. His ex-wife Nancy also makes appearances in his mind, as he envisions discussing their failed marriage with her. During one instance, both Bogart and Nancy seem to materialize at the same time. In his pursuit of women, Allan strives to emulate the suaveness of his idol, Bogart, but often ends up fumbling and ruining his chances. However, he finds solace and comfort with Linda, and does not feel the need to put on an act around her. Nevertheless, when Linda reciprocates his feelings (thanks to some advice from Bogart), a vision of Nancy suddenly appears and shoots down Bogart’s words of wisdom.
