Play Misty for Me (1971)
In his directorial debut, Clint Eastwood brings us the American psychological thriller film, Play Misty for Me (1971). The story follows Dave Garver, a radio DJ at KRML who often incorporates poetry into his nightly broadcasts from Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. After a shift at the station, Dave heads to his favorite bar where he plays a game with the bartender involving corks and bottle caps. It is here that he catches the eye of Evelyn Draper, who reveals that she purposely sought him out after hearing about the bar on his show. As they drive back to her place, it becomes clear that Evelyn is the recurring caller who always requests the jazz standard ‘Misty’. Eventually, their encounter leads to an intimate moment between them.
As Dave and Evelyn’s casual relationship begins, signs of trouble soon emerge. Evelyn’s obsessive tendencies and unpredictable outbursts worry Dave. She shows up uninvited at his house, stalks him at work, and demands he never leave her side. The situation reaches its breaking point when a jealous Evelyn causes chaos during a business meeting, mistakenly assuming Dave’s colleague is his date and jeopardizing an important career opportunity for him. Despite rejecting her advances and refusing to give in to her blackmail attempt using her injuries, Evelyn crosses a line by breaking into his home and causing damage to his belongings, which is discovered by his housekeeper Birdie.
