Playing by Heart (1998)
Playing by Heart (1998) is a comedic-drama film that follows the lives of various characters in Los Angeles. These include an older couple renewing their wedding vows, a theatre director and architect starting anew, a young woman seeking excitement, a gay man with AIDS and his distant mother, an unfaithful couple trying to reignite their marriage, and the husband exploring ways to overcome its dullness. As the plot unfolds, the audience discovers the interconnectedness between these seemingly unrelated individuals. Unhappily wedded Hugh frequently pursues women using a variety of falsehoods: claiming he caused the death of his wife and child in a car accident; stating that his family left him on the same day he was terminated from work; and confessing to having an affair with his brother-in-law.
While at a bar, Hugh bumps into Valery, a classmate from their improv group, and boasts about how much better he performs in real life compared to during their classes. Meanwhile, Paul, who is battling a brain tumor, and Hannah are busy organizing their 40th anniversary celebration and vow renewal ceremony. Despite Hannah’s attempts to address Paul’s terminal illness, he refuses to acknowledge it. She even considers cancelling her cooking show for television in light of Paul’s condition, but he insists she carry on. During a confrontation over a photo of another woman found in Paul’s desk, he finally admits that he never slept with her because he was still in love with her.
