Meanwhile, in Werowocomoco, Tsenacommacah, Virginia, Pocahontas is faced with the possibility of marrying Kocoum, a serious warrior who does not share her free-spirited nature. After receiving a vision of a spinning arrow in her dream, Pocahontas seeks guidance from Grandmother Willow, a wise and spiritual talking willow tree who warns her of the upcoming arrival of the English. The leader of this expedition is Governor Ratcliffe, whose main goal is to gain wealth and status. Upon arriving in Jamestown, he orders his men to dig for gold while John sets off to explore the wilderness where he encounters Pocahontas.
Initially, Pocahontas conceals her ability to speak English, but Grandmother Willow reassures her that there is nothing to fear. They quickly form a bond and become fascinated by each other’s worlds, eventually falling in love. However, after a skirmish between settlers and natives, Powhatan forbids the natives from interacting with the Englishmen. Pocahontas defies this order and continues secretly meeting with John. Unfortunately, Nakoma, Pocahontas’s best friend, discovers their relationship and warns Kocoum about it. Ratcliffe also discovers John’s encounters and angrily warns him against showing mercy to any Natives. Later on, John and Pocahontas meet with Grandmother Willow to devise a plan for peace between the colonists and the tribe. As they share a kiss while being watched by both parties, Kocoum becomes enraged and attacks John. He is then killed by Thomas, a young settler who had been instructed by Ratcliffe to follow John after he saved his life. John urges Thomas to leave before the tribesmen arrive and orders him to retrieve Kocoum’s body in order to avoid being captured himself.
