Point Break (1991)
Point Break (1991) is an American action film directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff. Johnny Utah, a former Ohio State quarterback and rookie FBI agent, joins forces with Agent Angelo Pappas to investigate a series of bank robberies carried out by the ‘Ex-Presidents’ – thieves who don rubber masks of past Presidents such as Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, and Lyndon B. Johnson. These cunning robbers have a unique MO: instead of robbing the entire vault, they only take the cash from the tellers’ drawers before quickly making their escape within ninety seconds. Pappas suspects that the criminals are surfers and convinces Utah to infiltrate their community. To gain their trust, Utah concocts a story about a personal tragedy and enlists the help of orphaned surfer and restaurant waitress Tyler to teach him how to surf. It is through her that he meets Bodhi – leader of a group known as Roach, Grommet, and Nathaniel – all avid surfers.
Initially wary, the group warms up to Utah after Bodhi recognizes him as a former college football star who left the game due to a knee injury. As he excels in surfing, Utah is captivated by the surfers’ exhilarating lifestyle, Bodhi’s philosophies, and Tyler. By analyzing toxins found in a bank robber’s hair, Utah and Pappas receive a clue that leads them to conduct an FBI raid on another group of surfers. Unfortunately, two of the surfers are killed during the raid, disrupting an undercover DEA operation as they were wanted for drug dealing charges rather than being part of the infamous Ex-Presidents gang. While observing Bodhi’s close-knit crew catching waves, Utah starts to suspect their true identities as the Ex-Presidents due to their tight bond and one of them displaying similar mooning antics as one of the robbers.
