Poison (1991) is an American science fiction drama horror film, written and directed by Todd Haynes. With three intercut narratives that draw inspiration from the novels of Jean Genet, the movie showcases an emerging ‘queer new wave’ in cinema. The closing credits reveal the names of the three interconnected stories featured in the film.

1. Hero. A news segment in the style of a 1980s tabloid television magazine showcases a seven-year-old who shoots his abusive father before taking flight.

2. Horror. After consuming the ‘elixir of human sexuality’, a scientist undergoes a transformation into a violent leper, resembling the antagonist in a psychedelic 1960s science fiction horror film.

3. Homo. One inmate is drawn to another prisoner, brought back together after first crossing paths in a juvenile detention center. The movie shifts between a harsh prison setting and whimsical flashbacks reminiscent of a countryside daydream.
