Post Grad (2009), an American romantic comedy-drama directed by Vicky Jenson, follows the story of Ryden Malby. She had been meticulously planning her life since she was eleven, and now, despite facing the challenges of graduating during a recession and relying on scholarships to fund her education, she is finally receiving her bachelor’s degree in English. During the graduation ceremony, there is some chaos as Ryden’s family arrives late. Along with her upbeat father Walter, meticulous mother Carmella, and ambitious younger brother Hunter, her eccentric grandmother Maureen also makes an appearance with her trusty oxygen tank. Jessica Bard, Ryden’s long-standing rival, delivers the commencement speech before Ryden and her family head out to celebrate with Ryden’s best friend Adam Davies – who has harbored strong feelings for her since their freshman year.
Adam has applied to Columbia Law School but is uncertain about his future in either law or music. Meanwhile, Ryden excitedly informs her family that she has a job interview scheduled for her dream position as an assistant editor at the prestigious Happerman and Browning publishing company in Los Angeles. She has also found a fantastic loft to rent. However, on the way to the interview, Ryden’s car collides with a truck and the driver leaves without providing insurance information. This forces Ryden to walk to Happerman and Browning, leaving her disheveled and stressed upon arrival. She is then directed to a waiting area filled with other applicants.
