Presto (2008)
Presto (2008) is an American computer-animated short film by Pixar that played in theaters prior to their feature-length film WALL-E. The film centers around Presto DiGiotagione, a vaudeville-era magician known for his hat trick involving his rabbit Alec Azam. However, in this particular performance, Alec finds himself locked in a cage and unable to reach his carrot. When Presto returns from eating, he attempts to practice his act with Alec using their magically connected hats – one of which is kept backstage with the rabbit. But as the show begins and Presto rushes onstage, Alec refuses to cooperate until he receives his carrot. This leads to multiple mishaps for Presto as the clever rabbit turns the hats against him, causing escalating levels of embarrassment and humor for the audience. From getting caught in a mousetrap to being hit between the legs with a ladder, each mishap is interpreted as part of the act.
Presto continues to provoke Alec by transforming a carrot into a flower and then destroying it with part of the ladder. This results in Alec retaliating by inserting Presto’s hand into an electrical socket using the wizard’s hat. Frustrated with Alec’s actions, Presto follows him backstage, but accidentally gets caught in a rigging rope and is lifted up into the fly space above the stage. As he falls, his foot gets stuck again, and he is in danger of being crushed by falling props and a piano. Recognizing this danger, Alec uses magic from the hats to save Presto, earning loud cheers from the audience for both of them.
