One night, after leaving a business party in the Hollywood Hills, Edward takes his lawyer Philip’s Lotus Esprit and ends up in the red-light district on Hollywood Boulevard. It is there that he meets Vivian Ward, a struggling prostitute. As he struggles with the car’s stick-shift, Vivian offers to drive him to the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Despite some initial awkwardness, they connect and end up having sex in Edward’s penthouse suite. The next day, as Edward has a series of business events to attend and is also attempting to acquire Jim Morse’s shipbuilding company, he impulsively asks Vivian to stay for the week. After some negotiation, they agree on $3,000 for her services and Edward also gives her money to buy appropriate clothes.
However, during Vivian’s attempt to shop on Rodeo Drive, she encounters unpleasant and haughty saleswomen who refuse to assist her. Frustrated, she turns to the hotel manager Barney for help. Thankfully, Barney arranges for Bridget, a friendly and high-end store employee, to find a cocktail dress for Vivian’s important business dinner that evening. Afterward, Barney also kindly teaches her proper dining etiquette. To everyone’s surprise, including Edward’s, Vivian undergoes a remarkable transformation. At the dinner, Edward introduces her to Morse and his grandson David, heir to their company. The Morses are won over by Vivian’s charm; however, the night takes a turn when they learn of Edward’s plans to dismantle their business.
