Prisoners (2013)
Prisoners (2013), a thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Aaron Guzikowski, follows the Dover and Birch families as they celebrate Thanksgiving in Conyers, Pennsylvania. The festivities take a dark turn when young girls Anna Dover and Joy Birch go missing after playing near a parked RV. Detective Loki responds to a police call about the vehicle and apprehends its occupant, Alex Jones. However, during questioning, Loki realizes that Alex’s low IQ makes him an unlikely kidnapper and finds no evidence of the girls in his RV. Turning his attention to local pedophiles, Loki discovers a body in the home of Priest Patrick Dunn, who confesses to murdering sixteen children as part of his ‘war on God’.
After the police captain hands Alex over to his aunt, Holly, convinced of the boy’s guilt, Keller Dover, father of one of the missing girls, assaults him outside the station. Alex whispers to Keller that ‘They didn’t cry ’til I left them’, but after Detective Loki finds no evidence to support this claim, Keller decides to take matters into his own hands. He kidnaps Alex and brings him to an empty building that belongs to Keller. There, he begins to torture Alex in hopes of getting information about his daughter’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, at a vigil for the missing girls, Detective Loki approaches a suspicious man who quickly flees. After releasing a sketch of this suspect to the community, Loki learns that he has been sneaking into both the Birch and Dover houses. Grace, Keller’s wife, hears someone in their home and calls Loki for help.
