Rescue Dawn (2006), an epic war drama film written and directed by Werner Herzog, is based on an adapted screenplay from his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly. In February 1966, Lt. Dieter Dengler, a German-born U.S. Navy pilot in squadron VA-145 on the USS Ranger, is shot down over Laos while on a combat mission.
