The Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable (2012) episode, penned by Whedon, features an adventure set on the alien planet Breakworld. The team faces off against the Breakworld leaders, whose plan is to destroy Earth with a massive bullet. The subplot involving Danger is also resolved as it is revealed that she is programmed not to kill. Shadowcat bravely phases into the bullet and uses her abilities to make it intangible as it approaches Earth, saving the planet. Unfortunately, she ends up being pulled away with the bullet and disappears into space.

The Whedon storyline known as Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous (2012) centers around a Sentinel assault orchestrated by an unknown orchestrator. It is eventually revealed that the culprit is none other than the Danger Room itself, now manifesting as a robotic entity aptly named ‘Danger’. Whedon also discloses that Professor X had imprisoned Danger and forced it to serve as the controlling force of the Danger Room, much to the dismay of the X-Men. In addition, it is discovered that Emma Frost has allied herself with the newly formed Hellfire Club.

Astonishing X-Men: Gifted (2009) centered on the introduction of key team members and their roles. Whedon unveiled an Indian scientist, Dr. Kavita Rao, who had created a ‘mutant cure’ with support from alien warrior Ord. The idea of being fully human captivates Beast, who seeks out Rao but instead uncovers that the cure was made through unlawful experimentation on an unidentified person. The X-Men invade Benetech and are joined by Colossus. With his assistance, they defeat Ord, but not before learning that a mutant (possibly one of their own) would destroy Ord’s home planet, Breakworld, within three ...
