Its main source of inspiration was Daniel Okrent’s 2010 book, Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition.
Throughout American history, heavy alcohol consumption has been deeply ingrained in its national identity. But in the 1800s, a Temperance movement emerged, determined to combat this harmful habit by any means necessary. This series chronicles the crusade that ultimately led to the passing of the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution, which implemented prohibition. After this triumph, the series delves into the unintended consequences of this social reform – including an increase in illicit drinking and organized crime – which had a lasting impact on civil liberties and societal reverence for the law that can still be felt today.
