Promise at Dawn (2017) is a drama film directed by Éric Barbier, from a screenplay co-written with Marie Eynard. Appropriately set against the vibrant backdrop of Mexico’s Day of the Dead festivities, Eric Barbier’s Promise at Dawn weaves a tale where the influence of deceased loved ones holds great weight, even in unexpected ways. Amidst the revelry, Vogue editor Lesley Blanch makes her way through the festive crowd to assist her husband, renowned writer Romain Gary. Though he believes his brain tumor will soon claim his life, Blanch remains composed and optimistic. During their five-hour taxi ride to a Mexico City hospital, Blanch reads her husband’s latest work – his titular memoir that he calls a testament.

Gary’s literary endeavor is essentially focused on reviving his deceased mother, Nina Kacew. Growing up, she had made it clear that she had given up a potential acting career to raise him as a single parent. She constantly reminded him that she would not be content with anything less than a legendary life for him. Despite later admitting that she may not have been as skilled of a performer as he thought, her knack for improvisation and tapping into her vivid imagination not only kept her employed, but also extended her lifespan beyond the limitations of mortality.
