Promised Land (2012)

Gus Van Sant’s drama, Promised Land (2012), follows the journey of Steve Butler as he climbs the ranks at Global Crosspower Solutions, an energy company focused on fracking for natural gas. With a proven record of efficiently and cost-effectively securing mineral rights leases from land owners, Butler catches the attention of top management. Teaming up with his partner Sue Thomason, Butler travels to a struggling farming community in Pennsylvania where residents take great pride in their long-standing family farms. Having grown up in a town similar to this one, Butler is determined to win over the locals on behalf of his employer. Drawing from personal experience, he shares how his own town suffered after its local Caterpillar assembly plant shut down.
The notion of a town reliant on generational family farms as a sustainable economy is no longer acceptable to him. He believes he is presenting the town with its final opportunity. After meeting Alice, a teacher at a bar, Butler enjoys some leisurely time. The community appears ready to accept Global’s proposal until Frank Yates, an elderly local high school science teacher and successful engineer, raises concerns about the safety of fracking during a town meeting. It is determined that the townspeople will vote in a few weeks whether or not to accept the offer. Upon learning of the vote, Dustin Noble, an unknown environmental advocate, launches a grassroots campaign against Global after hearing about his family’s loss of their Nebraska dairy farm due to the herds’ deaths caused by Global’s standard fracking procedure.
