Directed by Mick Garris, Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990) is an American made-for-television slasher film that serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. It delves into the early life of Norman Bates and his struggles with mental illness before the events depicted in the original film. This installment marks both the third sequel and final film in the Psycho franchise, with Anthony Perkins making his last appearance as Norman Bates before his death in 1992. Now married to a psychiatrist named Connie and anticipating the arrival of their child, Norman battles with his fears of passing on his mental illness. One night, he hears radio host Fran Ambrose discussing matricide with Dr. Richmond, who was previously his therapist. Wanting to share his story, Norman calls into the show using the alias ‘Ed’.
Norman’s story is a collection of flashbacks that take place during the 1940s and 1950s, some of which may not be in chronological order. When he was only six years old, his father passed away, leaving him in the care of his mother, Norma. As time goes on, Norma (who is believed to have schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder) gains control over her son, resorting to physical violence for even the smallest mistake. She even goes as far as dressing him up as a girl and smearing lipstick on his face as punishment. In addition, she makes him urinate like a girl by making him squat over a pitcher. Due to the new interstate routing diverting potential customers away from their motel, Norma takes out her frustration on Norman when business starts to decline.
