Public Enemies (2009)
Public Enemies (2009), an American biographical crime drama film directed by Michael Mann, follows notorious criminal John Dillinger as he attempts to evade the law and continue his life of crime in 1933. With a screenplay co-written by Ronan Bennett and Ann Biderman, the movie begins with Dillinger’s daring escape from the Indiana State Penitentiary alongside his crew. Tragically, his mentor Walter Dietrich is killed during the jailbreak. After changing their clothes and finding refuge at a safe house on Chicago’s east side, Dillinger and his accomplices carry out a series of bank robberies while FBI agent Melvin Purvis is promoted by J. Edgar Hoover to lead the hunt for Dillinger. Purvis employs modern techniques such as fingerprint cataloging and wiretapping to track down the elusive criminal. Amidst all this chaos, Dillinger manages to find time for romance as he woos Billie Frechette over dinner at a restaurant and even reveals his true identity to her. Despite this revelation, Frechette falls deeply in love with him and they become inseparable.
After Purvis’s failed ambush of Dillinger at a hotel, an FBI agent loses his life at the hands of Baby Face Nelson, who manages to flee with Tommy Caroll. Realizing the need for more skilled agents to handle these dangerous criminals, Purvis appeals to Hoover for assistance. In response, Intelligence officer Charles Winstead, a veteran leader, is sent to support Purvis in his mission. Eventually, Dillinger and his gang are caught by local police in Tucson, Arizona after a fire breaks out at their lodging in Hotel Congress. The group is then extradited to Indiana, where Sheriff Lillian Holley detains Dillinger in the Lake County Jail in Crown Point. In an attempt to escape using a fake gun, Dillinger is unable to meet with his girlfriend Frechette as she is closely monitored by law enforcement. Later on, Dillinger discovers that Frank Nitti’s associates have abandoned him due to the FBI’s crackdown on interstate crime – which also jeopardizes Nitti’s illegal gambling activities. This leads Dillinger and Red Hamilton to seek alternative sources of income as they are no longer able to rely on support from the Chicago Outfit.
