Pushing Tin (1999)
Pushing Tin (1999), directed by Mike Newell, tells the story of Nick ‘The Zone’ Falzone and his colleagues at the New York TRACON. These air traffic controllers are known for their remarkable ability to handle the immense pressure of controlling one of the busiest airspaces in the country. In fact, they boast about the 50% drop-out rate among new staff who can’t cope with the stress. However, their dynamic is disrupted when Russell Bell, a quiet and confident veteran from Western US TRACONs, joins their team. Russell’s unorthodox and risky methods quickly prove him to be a highly capable controller, much to Nick’s chagrin as he begins to feel challenged and out-performed at every task.
Nick becomes wary of Russell’s loose-cannon reputation, especially after learning about an incident where he stood on a runway and allowed himself to be propelled by a landing commercial airliner’s wake turbulence. While at the supermarket, Nick meets Russell’s wife Mary, who is grieving over a cart full of alcohol. After consoling her, he ends up at the Bells’ home where they both betray their partners. Days later, Mary reveals that she told Russell about their affair and surprisingly, it has actually strengthened their marriage. Fearful of Russell’s reaction, Nick confronts him at work and is taken aback by his calm response. Meanwhile, Nick’s wife Connie grows increasingly interested in Russell and this causes Nick to worry that he may seek retribution by sleeping with her.
