'R Xmas (2000)
‘R Xmas (2001) is an American crime film directed by Abel Ferrara. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. The movie opens with the following disclaimer: ‘In December of 1993 the Honorable David Dinkins was completing his first and only term as Mayor of New York’. An unnamed Latin-American married couple outwardly live a lavish lifestyle – sending their daughter to an elite private school, residing in a high-rise building with doormen. However, their source of income involves commuting to a dreary apartment in Flushing where they package and sell heroin alongside their relatives. As Christmas approaches, one of the husband’s regular associates asks him to temporarily store a large quantity of heroin for him during the holiday. On Christmas Eve, while the husband takes what appears to be a routine meeting, the wife ventures into an illicit pawnshop in search of a popular ‘Party Girl’ doll that is currently sold out for their daughter.
After purchasing the toy, she is approached by a man who reveals he has her husband’s driver’s license. He claims to have been abducted and demands a ransom within 20 minutes. She manages to gather roughly $15,000 from her street connections but he is dissatisfied with the amount. Threatening to expose personal information about their family, he insists on receiving more money and all of their available drugs. In a rush to gather these resources during the Christmas holiday when their contacts are unavailable, her husband is beaten by a group that seems to be corrupt law enforcement officers. When she returns, the man becomes uncomfortably familiar with her, probing about their relationship and warning her to put an end to her husband’s drug dealings.
