Radio Days (1987)
Radio Days (1987), an American comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen, nostalgically looks back at the golden age of radio in the late 1930s and 1940s. Set in Rockaway Beach, New York, it follows a working-class family, with fictional narrator Joe (voiced by Allen himself) recounting their adventures. Among these is how two burglars stumbled upon a radio show while robbing a home. For Joe, old radio songs evoke childhood memories of his time living with his modest Jewish-American family in Rockaway Beach during the late 1930s and early 1940s. His mother was a fan of Breakfast with Irene and Roger, while his father’s occupation remained a mystery until Joe discovered he was ashamed of being a taxi driver. Other colorful family members included Uncle Abe, Aunt Ceil, grandpa and grandma, and Aunt Bea who was always on the hunt for a potential husband.
Joe’s preferred radio program was The Masked Avenger, which sparked his desire to own a covert decoder ring. In his imagination, the Masked Avenger embodied the qualities of a true hero, but in truth, the man behind the voice was short and lacked hair. Other noteworthy radio moments included tales of heroic athletes, updates on World War II, a broadcast about a supposed alien attack, and a live account of the search for a young girl who fell into a well. Joe and his schoolmates would often scan the skies for German aircraft, but one time they stumbled upon something unexpected: a woman undressing in her bedroom. As it turned out, she was their substitute teacher. During a solitary stroll by the coast, Joe spotted a German U-boat but chose not to share his sighting with anyone since he figured no one would believe him.
