Radioactive (2019)

Radioactive (2019) is a British biographical drama film directed by Marjane Satrapi and written by Jack Thorne. Based on the 2010 graphic novel Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by American artist Lauren Redniss, the film follows the life of Marie Curie. After collapsing in her Paris laboratory in 1934, she reflects on her past experiences. Despite facing frequent rejection for funding in 1893 due to her shared attitude with Pierre Curie, Marie ultimately finds solace in their joint laboratory. Their relationship blossoms as they discover polonium and radium together, leading them to be married and have two children. With the announcement of their groundbreaking discovery of radioactivity, the couple revolutionizes physics and chemistry. As radium becomes a popular ingredient in commercial products, Pierre takes Marie to a séance where it is used to communicate with the dead. However, Marie remains skeptical of spiritualism and afterlife beliefs following the death of her mother in Poland.
Despite Pierre’s rejection of the Légion d’honneur for not acknowledging Marie and his insistence on sharing their Nobel Prize in Physics, she becomes upset when he accepts it in Stockholm without her. Soon after, Pierre’s health declines due to his research and he is killed by a horse. Despite initially dismissing concerns about the toxicity of her elements, more people begin dying from exposure to radium. Overwhelmed, she starts a relationship with colleague Paul Langevin. She is eventually given Pierre’s position at the Sorbonne, but her Polish background leads to xenophobic attacks from the French nationalist media, who also publicize her affair with Langevin.
