Raines (2007), a seven-episode American police procedural TV show, follows the story of detective Michael Raines, played by Jeff Goldblum. Raines has a unique ability – he hallucinates the victims of the murders he is investigating. The show was created by Graham Yost and aired in spring 2007, receiving mixed reviews. In each episode, Raines returns to work after recovering from a shootout that claimed his partner’s life, Charlie Lincoln. As he delves deeper into each case, Raines involuntarily sees and talks to the victims as if they were still alive. These visions serve as helpful resources for him to solve the murders; however, they disappear once the case is solved. According to creator and executive producer Graham Yost, this premise reflects his own creative process of spending time alone with characters and engaging in dialogue within his head.

Detective Raines investigates the murder of Sandy Boudreau, a young college student and escort. He eliminates several suspects, including a homeless man who robbed her body, her father, and her ex-boyfriend. It turns out that Boudreau was hired by Wendy Tucker to seduce her own husband; when Boudreau threatened to expose the scheme, Tucker shot her. In a twist of events, Raines takes the money from evidence and gives it to Boudreau’s mother in order for her to leave an abusive relationship. Meanwhile, Julio Santiago comes to the US with his wife and baby but is soon found dead in a canal. Raines rules out Santiago’s coyote and discovers that it was actually councilman Aurelio Sanchez who killed him after mistaking him for a hitman. As it turns out, Santiago was Sanchez’s secret illegitimate child who orchestrated the trip in hopes of meeting his father. In addition to all of this, Raines reluctantly begins therapy at his captain’s request.
