Raising Cain (1992)
Brian De Palma wrote and directed Raising Cain (1992), an American psychological horror thriller. Dr. Carter Nix, a respected child psychologist, causes concern for his wife Jenny when she notices him obsessively studying their daughter Amy. To Carter, Amy is like a creation he’s constantly tracking. However, as Carter struggles with multiple personality disorder, his alternate personalities emerge – including violent petty criminal Cain, shy 7-year-old Josh, and protective middle-aged nanny Margo. As the two main personalities work together to kill young mothers and steal their children, they seem to be fulfilling some purpose related to Carter’s father – a disgraced child psychologist who engaged in unethical experiments on his patients years ago.
Jenny is involved with her ex-boyfriend Jack Dante, the widower of a former patient. She intends to leave Carter for him, but when Carter discovers their tryst, Cain steps in. He leaves subtle hints for the police that implicate Jack in the murders. Then, he tries to kill Jenny by suffocating her and sinking her car in a lake. Jenny manages to escape and confronts Carter at home. Frustrated by not being able to find Amy, she demands answers from Carter. However, he claims Amy is with his deceased father – much to Jenny’s disbelief since his father passed away years ago. The police turn to Dr. Lynn Waldheim for help, as she co-wrote a book with Nix Sr., titled ‘Raising Cain’, which delved into the life of a boy with multiple personality disorder and included detailed accounts of Cain’s difficult childhood, including recorded therapy sessions with Nix Sr.
