Raising Helen (2004)
Directed by Garry Marshall and written by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, Raising Helen (2004) is an American comedy-drama film. The story follows three sisters, Jenny, Helen, and Lindsay Harris, who are all living in New York. After the loss of their mother when they were young, Jenny took on the role of raising her two younger sisters. While Jenny and Lindsay are devoted stay-at-home moms, Helen enjoys her glamorous lifestyle as an executive assistant at one of Manhattan’s top modeling agencies. One day, Jenny calls Helen with devastating news – Lindsay and her husband Paul have passed away in a car accident, leaving behind their three children: Audrey (15), Henry (10), and Sarah (5).
At a meeting with Lindsay’s lawyer, to their surprise, both sisters learn that Lindsay chose Helen to be the legal guardian of the children. In addition to this decision, they also receive heartfelt letters from their late sister. Condemned to abandon her carefree ways and relocate to Queens, Helen initially faces difficulties in single-handedly raising the children. As time passes, her focus at work starts to wane and she gets dismissed, prompting her to take on a receptionist role at a car dealership. An argument between Helen and Jenny about parenting methods causes a rift in their relationship. Fortunately, things take a positive turn when Helen begins a romantic relationship with Dan Parker – the principal of her children’s school and also the pastor – who helps strengthen their bond.
