Rampart (2011)
Rampart (2011) is a gripping crime drama directed and co-written by Oren Moverman and James Ellroy. The film follows Dave Brown, a seasoned member of the LAPD’s Rampart Division with over two decades of experience. In the midst of training a new officer, Brown resorts to violence to extract information from a suspect regarding a meth lab location. After his shift, he returns home to his two daughters and two ex-wives, who also happen to be sisters. A late-night visit to a piano bar leads to a spontaneous one-night stand with a stranger. However, Brown’s fate takes a turn when he is involved in a car accident and violently retaliates against the other driver who attempts to flee. A bystander captures the incident on video, causing yet another scandal for the already troubled LAPD.
With pressure from the Assistant District Attorney to retire, Brown remains resolute in his decision and firmly states his defense. Throughout the film, it is revealed that Brown, despite failing the bar exam, possesses extensive knowledge of case law. During his visit to the piano bar, he befriends a lawyer named Linda, after ensuring she is not monitoring him. Later, ex-cop Hartshorn suspects that Brown was framed to divert attention from a scandal. As the LAPD intensifies their scrutiny of Brown, he seeks legal representation. In the midst of all this, his former wives ask him to vacate their homes in order to sell them. When Brown meets with Hartshorn again, he mentions his financial struggles and is informed about a high-stakes card game taking place at the Crystal Market that night.
