Rango (2011)
In the animated Western comedy Rango (2011), directed by Gore Verbinski and written by John Logan, a theatrically-minded pet chameleon finds himself stranded in the Mojave Desert of Nevada when his owners’ car accidentally loses his terrarium. Seeking refuge, he meets a nine-banded armadillo named Roadkill, who is on a quest for the ‘Spirit of the West’ and tells him about a town called Dirt where water mysteriously appears every Wednesday. With no other options, the chameleon sets out into the desert but not before narrowly escaping being preyed upon by a red-tailed hawk. He eventually comes across Beans, a desert iguana rancher who brings him to Dirt. When questioned about his identity, the chameleon takes on the persona of a tough drifter named ‘Rango’ and quickly gets into trouble with Gila monster Bad Bill, who challenges him to a duel. However, during the fight, an unexpected interruption from the hawk causes chaos and leads to its accidental demise when it crashes into an empty water tower knocked over by Rango.
After being appointed as the new sheriff by Dirt’s desert tortoise Mayor John, Rango is praised by the townsfolk, who believe he purposely earned the position. However, they are concerned about the possible return of notorious gunslinger Rattlesnake Jake now that their hawk nemesis is deceased. Adding to their troubles, the town is facing a severe drought. In response, Beans tasks Rango with investigating the whereabouts of their missing water supply. As fate would have it, Rango ends up unwittingly aiding a group of bank robbers in stealing the water, led by a mole named Balthazar. A posse is formed and they eventually find the dead banker Mr. Merrimack in the desert. The posse then tracks down Balthazar’s gang and engages them in a fight over the stolen water bottle, which turns out to be empty. Although claiming innocence, Rango still takes the robbers into custody for further questioning.
