Ravenous (1999) is a horror comedy Western cannibal film that takes place in 1840s California. Directed by Antonia Bird and filmed in Europe, the movie follows Second Lieutenant John Boyd during the Mexican-American War. As his unit is slaughtered in battle, Boyd plays dead to avoid fighting. He ends up being put in a cart with the other dead bodies and taken behind Mexican lines. But luck is on his side when he gets the chance to capture the enemy’s command post. His bravery earns him a promotion, but it also reveals his cowardly tactics to General Slauson. As punishment, Boyd is sent into exile at Fort Spencer – a remote military outpost high in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

This fort is run by Colonel Hart and inhabited by a diverse group of soldiers, including the religious Private Toffler, drug-addicted Private Cleaves, drunken Major Knox, ferocious Private Reich, and Native American scout George and his sister Martha. Soon after Boyd’s arrival at the garrison, a frostbitten stranger named Colqhoun appears and recounts a horrific story. He claims that his wagon train became stranded in the mountains after following a supposed shortcut to the Pacific Ocean promised by Colonel Ives. The group was stuck in the snow for three months, facing starvation and ultimately resorting to cannibalism – with Colqhoun accusing Ives of murder. In response, a rescue team is organized to search for any survivors and apprehend Ives.
