Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) is a 3D animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Five centuries ago, the once peaceful sub-continent of Kumandra was destroyed by dark spirits known as the Druun, turning all living things to stone. Sisu, the lone surviving dragon, inherited her siblings’ magic which was contained in a precious gem. By concentrating her power into the gem, she vanquishes the Druun and restores life to Kumandra’s people, though not its dragons. This leads to a struggle for control over the gem and divides the people into five kingdoms named Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon and Tail – each representing their location along a massive dragon-shaped river.
After half a millennium, Chief Benja of the Heart tribe passes down the dragon gem to his daughter, young warrior Princess Raya. With unwavering hope for reuniting Kumandra, Benja hosts a celebratory gathering for the leaders of all five tribes. Amidst the festivities, Raya befriends Namaari, Princess of the Fang tribe and daughter of Chief Virana. Namaari gifts Raya with a dragon pendant and shares a legend about Sisu, believed to still exist and able to aid them. Trusting her newfound friend, Raya reveals the gem’s location in her tribe’s chamber. However, Namaari’s true intentions are revealed when she betrays Raya as part of a scheme to steal the precious gem for Fang.
