Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One (2018) is a sci-fi film set in a future where people use the OASIS, a virtual reality universe created by James Halliday and Ogden Morrow of Gregarious Games, to escape their bleak reality. When Halliday passes away, his avatar Anorak leaves a message announcing a contest: whoever finds the golden Easter egg hidden behind a locked gate within the OASIS will gain ownership of the entire game. This attracts many players known as ‘Gunters’ as well as Nolan Sorrento, CEO of Innovative Online Industries (IOI), who wants to take control of the OASIS for himself by using intrusive online advertising. In order to find the egg, players must complete three challenges and collect keys. To aid in their search, IOI sends out an army of indentured servants and employees called ‘Sixers’. As a teenage orphan, Wade Watts spends most of his time as his avatar Parzival, an avid Gunter.
He recently took part in the first challenge, a seemingly impossible race, alongside his best friend Aech and Art3mis, a popular female streamer whose virtual version has captured Parzival’s heart. To gain an advantage, Parzival often consults Halliday’s Journals, a virtual collection of the late creator’s personal interests and experiences, curated by the Curator. It is here that he learns of a clever trick to win the race by driving in reverse and earns the Copper Key from Anorak. Following suit, Art3mis, Aech, and their gaming friends Daito and Sho also succeed in winning the race and are collectively known as the High-5 on the OASIS’ leaderboard. Meanwhile, Sorrento enlists mercenary i-R0k to uncover Parzival’s true identity in hopes of bribing him to help IOI win the contest. Wade and Art3mis stumble upon some interesting information while reading through Halliday’s Journals: it turns out that Halliday once dated Karen “Kira” Underwood, who happens to be Morrow’s wife.
