Reaper (2007 — 2009)
As a comedy, Reaper (2007–2009) follows Sam Oliver as he retrieves souls that have escaped Hell for the Devil. The series ran from September 25, 2007, to May 26, 2009, airing on The CW on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern/7:00 p.m. Central. For Asian broadcasts, Fox has purchased the rights to the show. ABC Studios and The Mark Gordon Company produced the series. Sam Oliver resides in the Seattle area with his parents (Andrew Airlie and Allison Hossack). After dropping out of college (‘It made him sleepy’, according to his mom), he landed a lackluster job at the Work Bench, a home repair superstore. His days were filled with aimless activities like playing video games and trying to catch the eye of his coworker Andi. However, on Sam’s 21st birthday, things took a bizarre turn when his parents began acting strangely and Sam himself started experiencing visions from hell. His father eventually confessed that long ago he had been gravely ill and made a deal with the Devil to restore his health in exchange for their firstborn child.
Despite their intentions to deceive Satan by not having children, their plans were thwarted when the Devil convinced their doctor to lie about their fertility issues in return for clearing his debts. Consequently, Sam was born shortly thereafter. After delivering the news of his fate, the Devil proceeds to inform Sam that he will now assume the role of a ‘Reaper’, tasked with hunting down escaped souls from Hell and using his newfound telekinetic abilities to return them. These abilities are aided by unique objects known as ‘vessels’, crafted by wicked individuals in the depths of perdition. Each vessel is contained within a long wooden box, bearing an Italian inscription similar to that found on the entrance to Hell in Dante’s Inferno (‘Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch’entrate’ – ‘Abandon all hope, ye who enter here’). These vessels are specifically tailored for each assignment, with examples including a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner, Taser gun, and cigarette lighter. Despite initial reluctance on Sam’s part, Satan warns him that refusing this duty will result in his mother’s soul being lost forever.
